Neuromuscular dentistry is an aspect of dentistry that takes the positioning and alignment of your temporomandibular joint - TMJ - into account.
Your temporomandibular joint is the point at which your lower jaw meets your skull. For many people, this joint can become misaligned, causing many different dental and overall health problems.
When your temporomandibular joint is misaligned, it is referred to as TMJ disorder, or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder - TMD.
TMJ or TMD can be identified by various and sometimes painful symptoms, including:
- Grinding Teeth
- Migraines
- Headaches
- Facial Pain
- Clicking and Popping in the Jaw

The reason these symptoms occur when a person is suffering from TMJ, is because a misaligned temporomandibular joint puts a strain on all the muscles surrounding it. When the muscles are strained, your jaw is never completely at rest, because the muscles are in constant use.
When your muscles are strained, it causes tooth grinding and other dental problems because you are constantly searching for a comfortable jaw position. The strained muscles preventing correct blood flow cause other aches and pains.
To treat your TMJ, Dr. Avant will relax the muscles surrounding your temporomandibular joint. Once these muscles have been relaxed. Dr. Avant can map the movement of your jaw and diagnose where your jaw should rest.
For many people, an orthotic device is used to prevent their jaw from coming out of alignment. Dr. Avant will develop a custom treatment plan that will correct your TMJ and prevent you from suffering from TMJ symptoms.
