TMJ FAQ's
In Plano, Texas
What is TMJ?
TMJ is an acronym for Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome. TMJ is a term that has been developed to describe the group of symptoms that people can suffer from as a result from having a misaligned temporomandibular joint.
What is neuromuscular dentistry?
Neuromuscular dentistry is an aspect of dentistry that takes the position of the temporomandibular joint into account during every procedure performed on your teeth. Neuromuscular dentistry is not separate or different than cosmetic dentistry or traditional dentistry. Dentists use neuromuscular dentistry to prevent your next procedure from causing additional problems.
How does TMJ cause headaches and migraines?
TMJ causes migraines and headaches because the muscles surrounding the temporomandibular joint are constantly being strained as a result of the joint being out of alignment. The strained muscles can cause what feels like a tension headache. Also, when muscles are strained blood does not flow correctly, this impeded blood flow can cause what feels like a migraine. Dr. Avant and Dr. Ragnell can correctly diagnose you and determine if your chronic headaches or migraines are associated with TMJ.
Are all dentists familiar with TMJ?
No, not all dentists are familiar with TMJ and neuromuscular dentistry. Dentists like Dr. Avant have been through many hours of training at dental schools like the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. With his advanced training in neuromuscular, Dr. Avant and Dr. Ragnell will be able to treat your TMJ and prevent TMJ from occurring.
